The Burbank, CA based Contractors State License Center (CSLC) is accepting new students who are interested in taking the California contractor license exam. Administered by the Contractor State License Board, this exam is a crucial part of any contractor’s journey to better jobs and opportunities, and passing it on the first try is always the preferable option. Fortunately, this is exactly what the Contractors State License Center excels in assisting.

The Center provides contractor license classes in Los Angeles along with a variety of home study resources that are designed to help students prepare themselves for the exam. With more than 20 years of experience giving students all the tools they need to pass on their first attempt, CSLC continues to represent their best path forward. While the tests are multiple choice, an exam can last about 3.5 hours, so this is one reason students will not want to have to resort to repeat attempts. On the other hand, they will have to wait until the next round of exams is scheduled to try again, potentially limiting their career growth. It can take 6-8 weeks for a contractor to sit for an exam after submitting an application, and this time would be better spent pursuing new jobs.

While most hobbyists and part-time contractors will likely not need a license, it becomes necessary if they want to do any building work for a fee that exceeds $500. This is required by law, and it obliges businesses as well as individuals who work on buildings, highways, roads, parking facilities, railroads, excavations, and so on in Los Angeles to be licensed if the total cost of one or more contracts on a project is at $500 or more. This includes the cost of both labor and materials. Notably, larger projects may not be divided into amounts under this limit in order to meet the exemption. Minor projects, the total cost of which fall below this limit, also require the unlicensed contractor to provide the purchaser with the written disclosure in B&P Code section 7048 stating that they are not licensed by the CSLB. Should they fail to do so, the $500 exemption does not apply, and a citation can be issued for work completed by an unlicensed contractor.

According to CSLC, there are limits to who can apply for a license as well (questions on this may be directed to the Center’s staff for clarification). A contractor pursuing their license must have at least four years of experience in their chosen trade, although a part of this may be substituted with college or trade school, which can count up to three years (depending on the courses they have taken). Notably, any experience they document must have occurred in the past 10 years.

Students who come to the Center for classes can gain this experience either by working for a company or by being self-employed. CSLC confirms that the state will accept self-employed experience by unlicensed contractors as well, so this should not prove to be a barrier as long as they conducted themselves within the bounds of the law.

Given the stakes involved, the exam is designed to be stringent, testing applicants across a spectrum of subjects within their trade. No reference materials are allowed during the exam, and It has a reputation for being tough. However, the Center says this is largely not an issue for students who receive help, especially from dedicated professionals who make it their business to study the exams and prepare students accordingly. Students should also be aware that the Center offers a money-back guarantee in the event they fail to pass the first time.
