Gotham FootCare, a podiatric care clinic in New York City, is happy to announce their new Saorsa Swift wart removal system for plantar warts. Plantar warts are located on the heels and are more painful than other warts because of the pressure on them. The Swift system is based on an FDA-approved microwave device that directs microwave energy to the infected tissue through a specialized probe. Just like any other wart, plant warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), so the treatment works by stimulating the body’s immune system to attack the HPV infected tissue by elevating its temperature. More about this can be gleaned from their Facebook page at

The advanced Swift wart removal system is used to direct microwave energy to the infected tissue in order to activate the body’s immune system to work on the wart and ultimately remove it. Patients will experience some pain or discomfort during the treatment process but this will mostly happen while the microwave energy is rapidly heating up the infected tissue and will subside quickly after the microwaves have been turned off. This pain or discomfort is caused by the rapid rise in the tissue temperature and this lasts for about two seconds. After the procedure is completed there is very little pain and all patients have reported that they were able to immediately go back to their daily activities right after a treatment session.

People who have a plantar wart or suspect that they have it and want to get rid of it are advised to consult with their doctor or a podiatrist, because treatment should not be delayed. The longer the treatment is not provided, the longer the wart will persist. Some of the typical symptoms to check include the: presence of pain when compressing the sides of the wart; feeling of “painful pebbles” in the shoes; yellowed appearance with a crust and the presence of small black dots; presence of a circular flat spot on the skin with a depressed area in the middle; and the like. The plantar wart treatment will require three to four sessions with the Swift System in order to be effective. The sessions will be spaced four weeks apart to align with the body’s natural immune cycle. And each treatment session will only last for 5 to 10 minutes and there will only be minor debridement, no breaking of the skin, and bandages will not be needed. The pain and discomfort that may be experienced by the patient during the treatment process will vary from patient to patient, and it will mostly depend on the particular lesion and the patient. The pain and discomfort is mostly caused by temperature of the infected tissue increasing rapidly during the two second release of microwave energy. The pain immediately subsides after the energy delivery is stopped.
